Things got a whole lot brighter when we visited the New York State Museum. One of the first things we saw was this Automat!

This blog describes the self-curated, celebratory study tour of North America undertaken by Paul and myself from July to October 2018. It starts with the Atlantic crossing from Southampton, UK to New York. Our inspiration was to follow in the footsteps of the nineteenth century Northern European emigrants who had made this journey in their thousands during the period 1850 to 1920. We took their route to St Paul in Minnesota, sampling New York, the Hudson river, Catskill mountains, Albany, Rochester, Cleveland, Buffalo and Chicago. A unexpected bonus of the trip was the discovery of other key movements of American history: the Erie Canal, the Underground Railway, Women's Rights and masses of Space related travel sites for Paul. Truly memorable was following the Natchez Trail and spending 3 days on a cotton farm. Please enjoy the trip with us.
